TRESTON spearheads free journalism training for SPAs

Treston International College, through its Senior High School Department, organized a free campus journalism seminar for school paper advisers and campus journalism trainers from the public and private schools of the Schools Division of Taguig City & Pateros (SDO TaPat), and schools from neighboring cities of Makati, Pasig, Pasay, and Manila, held at the school’s Plenary Hall, May 21.

Present during the one-day seminar are the following: Dr. Marcial Sision, public schools district supervisor and senior high school focal person at SDO TaPat who gave a special message; Mr. Kenneth Castillo, assistant principal of Treston’s SHS Department, who delivered the opening remarks; Mr. Wilmor Pacay III, head of the Innovation, Publication & Research Office of Treston, who introduced the resource persons; and Dean Maria Carolina Abanil, the academic director and senior high school principal of Treston, who gave the closing remarks.

Among the invited resource persons for the event are Ms. Krishia Camille Soriano (Opinion Writing: Columns & Editorials) and Ms. Crystal Bernadette Naoe (Science & Technology Writing) who are both faculty members of the SHS Department of Treston while serving concurrently as school paper adviser (Ms. Soriano) and one of Treston’s campus journalism trainers (Ms. Naoe). Guest resource persons from outside Treston are Dr. Dolores Taylan, associate professor at De La Salle University Manila and adviser of Ang Pahayang Plaridel for over 20 years now, for the topic School Paper Advising; Mr. Jasper Emmanuel Arcalas, instructor at the journalism department of the University of Santo Tomas and correspondent at the Philippine Star for Teaching News Writing; and Mr. Mark Villaluna, campus journalism trainer and independent journalist for Teaching Feature Writing.

The event is an important gathering of campus journalism advisers and campus journalism trainers not just for various levels of annual schools press conferences but for further strengthening the craft of writing in campus journalism education among the campus journalists.

“It is our way of giving back to our schools who have been our partners through the years. Through your efforts in sending students to us, we have achieved remarkable achievements in campus journalism, most notably when we vied for a place in the National Schools Press Conference in Ormoc City for Pagsulat ng Agham, and our school paper, Treston Pride’s recent win as Ranked 9th in best sports page and Ranked 1st in best editorial page. Beyond these, our students–be in creative writing or journalism–are honed to become fine writers of their chosen field,” Dean Abanil said in closing.

The one-day gathering of campus journalism mentors was made through the support of the Student Affairs & Services Office, the Recruitment & Admissions Offices, the Innovation, Publication & Research Office, and the Office of the Executive Vice President.
